Contrast that with the reality that they devoted less than 2% of the DOT budgets to NHTSA safety – decade after decade.
Crash victims might judge their record differently in light of the enormous number of tragedies they presided over and did not prevent.
20 Years Later Honda to Start Offering Automatic Crash Notification (ACN) – As An Option

In 1997, under the Clinton Administration, NHTSA was briefed on the need and feasibility of improving emergency medical care for crash victims using Automatic Crash Notification (ACN) and URGENCY software. Today, from President Obama and candidate Clinton we see tears and hear political words about gun deaths but not about the greater number of crash deaths (100 per day) and serious injuries (400 per day) and losses valued by DOT at $2 Billion per day.
