Takata Engineers Manipulate Results of Air-Bag InflatorTests Honda Audit

Dear Care for Crash Victims Community Members:

Bloomberg reports on cover-up problems with the Takata airbag scandal.  One tragic case illustrates the life and death importance to crash victims.

“Mincey Lawsuit

In one instance, Takata’s manipulation of air-bag inflator test results in 2000 emerged last year as part of a lawsuit against the company on behalf of Patricia Mincey, a Florida woman who became a ventilator-dependent quadriplegic following a low-speed collision in her 2001 Honda Civic. Honda recalled the vehicle four days after the incident in June 2014. Mincey died earlier this year.

Before Takata agreed to settle the Mincey lawsuit last week, several current and former engineers said in depositions that the company also altered and misrepresented test data in reports to Toyota Motor Corp., Nissan Motor Co. and General Motors Co.

Brian Mayville, a Takata engineering manager, said during a deposition taken in November that select reports were not properly represented to Toyota and GM.”

Party Platforms Missing Auto Safety Goals

Dear Care for Crash Victims Community Members:

Mr. James R. Hood, founder of ConsumerAffairs.com has kindly noted this need for greater national political attention to the life or death issue of  vehicle violence.

Based on his long professional experience, he is realistically aware of the inequality between the problems for consumers of the nearly 100 vehicle deaths, 400 serious injuries, and $2 billion in losses each day in the U.S.A. today and the deadly silence of the political parties.   He wrote:

“Could it be lack of voter interest? Groups like DangerousJeeps and AnnaLeaha and Mary have gathered thousands of signatures on petitions seeking more aggressive government action, but such efforts don’t make much of a dent in a political landscape populated by hot-button social issues.

Lombardo, who was once a NHTSA program manager, doesn’t claim to have the answer. He is, however, applying modern marketing methods as he tries to reposition the issue by referring to it as “vehicle violence” instead of traffic deaths. Whether any of the candidates take the bait remains to be seen.”  Seehttps://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/party-platforms-ignore-highway-deaths-071316.html
Other writers on safety issues also share the daily frustration with lack of greater progress.  But safety and justice demand that we keep trying to make the progress that is both needed and within reach.  See https://www.careforcrashvictims.com/assets/MonthlyReport-June-July-2014.pdfhttps://www.careforcrashvictims.com/blog-volvoIIHSsee.php
Yes we can!  Yes we must!  And Yes we will!

Obama Budget Proposal Asks For Increase

Dear Care For Crash Victims Community Members:

Automotive News reports:

“WASHINGTON — President Obama’s budget proposal for fiscal 2016 would nearly triple funding for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration division that investigates vehicle safety defects, boosting a budget that had flat-lined for roughly a decade.

The White House proposed allocating $31.3 million to NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigation, up from around $11 million for the current fiscal year.”  Seehttp://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20150202/OEM11/150209979/obama-budget-nearly-triples-funding-for-nhtsa-defect-office

Note:  *  DOT values a statistical life at $9.4 million in 2015.  See https://www.transportation.gov/sites/dot.gov/files/docs/VSL2015_0.pdf

*  NHTSA estimated that crashes resulted in $871 Billion in societal harm in 2010.  See https://www.careforcrashvictims.com/assets/812013.pdf

Nader on Patriotism

Dear Care for Crash Victims Community Members:

On this July 4th weekend, watch this brief video and read the evaluation of Trump’s “patriotism”.  Seehttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/ralph-nader/how-unpatriotic-is-donald_b_10775828.html

And let’s remember that Nader’s efforts began the auto safety work that has saved an estimated 3.5 million American lives – and so much more good.

NTSB To Investigate Tesla Fatal Crash

Dear Care for Crash Victims Community Members:

An excellent Bloomberg article published in Automotive News reports:

“WASHINGTON — For years, U.S. investigators have been calling for more automation on motor vehicles, such as sensors that slam on the brakes to prevent a crash.

At the same time, the National Transportation Safety Board, in its probes of transportation mishaps, has warned that such devices may also have a down side: the technology can confuse operators if it’s poorly designed or lead to complacency that breeds its own hazards.

Now, for the first time in a highway accident, those two potentially contradictory themes will be put to the test as the NTSB opens an investigation into a fatal accident involving a Tesla Motors Inc. sedan that was driving with a feature called Autopilot enabled.

“It’s very significant,” said Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety advocacy group in Washington. “The NTSB only investigates crashes with broader implications.”  See  http://www.autonews.com/article/20160708/OEM11/307089859/ntsb-to-scrutinize-driver-automation-with-probe-of-tesla-crash

NHTSA’s Responsibilities For Deaths

Dear Care for Crash Victims Community Members:

Americans should be thankful for the work of Clarence Ditlow and the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) for identifying the failures of NHTSA and DOT that resulted in the preventable recent deaths of two Americans here in the U.S.A.

Please see the CAS Analysis and letter to NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind.

CAS Analysis Shows Tesla (Joshua Brown) & Jeep Shifter (Anton Yelchin) Deaths Lie at NHTSA’s Feet

July 15, 2016

The tragic deaths of Anton Yelchin and Joshua Brown due to faulty electronics must be placed squarely at NHTSA’s feet.  In its zeal to advance vehicle electronics, NHTSA has forgotten it is a regulatory agency to ensure vehicle safety, not a promotional agency to foster the development of vehicle technology.

Yelchin’s death is due to NHTSA creating a huge loophole in 1999 in FMVSS 102 governing transmission shift mechanisms.  Brown’s death is due to NHTSA’s failure to issue a FMVSS for self-driving controls and allowing Tesla to beta test an autopilot system using consumer as test drivers on public roads, something that has never before been done in NHTSA’s history.

Congress intended that compliance with the federal rules would both regulate and stimulate new technologies.  Today’s NHTSA has abandoned the regulatory side for the stimulation side at the expense of safety.  By issuing interpretative rules as it did on electronic shifters for BMW and not issuing Safety Standards as it did on self-driving vehicles, NHTSA created safety loopholes that inevitably led to the deaths of Joshua Brown and Anton Yelchin.

America needs people in government, in industry, and the media to do their jobs protecting the American people.

In this election year, we are on the road to 4 million vehicle deaths in the U.S.A. in the next decade.  How many more deaths will it take to get the President to set a Vision Zero goal?  See https://www.careforcrashvictims.com/assets/MonthlyReportforJanuary2016-Corrected.pdf

Citizen Marianne Karth and her family have gathered 20,000 signatures for President Obama to issue an executive order to set a Vision Zero goal.  See

What hidden strings are holding him back?

Put safety first, please.
