Corporate Governance: Inflation, The Fed, & Political Power

Dear Care for Crash Victims Community Members:

Inflation is rising.

The Fed is raising Interest Rates.

Who benefits?

Who is pulling the strings?

To what end?

As a NHTSA employee in the 1970’s under Jimmy Carter I worked to get airbag crash protection into cars.

The Fed back then raised interest rates to 18% by Election Day in 1980 and then raised rates to 21% on Reagan’s Inauguration Day.

Reagan appointed a coal industry lobbyist to head NHTSA who rescinded the airbag rule and cut NHTSA staff by 300 safety workers (33% of the NHTSA staff).  That reduced staffing level remains to this day.

Two of us asked a statistical analyst to examine the history of Fed Interest rates back to its creation in 1913 to see if there was any political pattern.

He found that in general there was a pattern.  The Fed generally raised interest rates in the last two years when Democrats held the White House and reduced interest rates in the last two years when Republicans held the White House.

It looks like a Political Playbook that is at work today.

Corporate Criminality – Climate Crisis 2022

Dear Care for Crash Victims Community Members:

Having come to Washington in 1965 to work on air pollution control, I still have not lost the desire to help advance the public interest in Clean Air.  See https://www.careforcrashvictims.com/1970s-polution-control-efforts/

I was able to help get the lead out of gasoline and out of children’s blood streams, get catalysts into cars, and octane ratings on gasoline pumps, but global emissions have grown to people and planet threatening levels today.

Legal Reader has kindly published my latest article on a pro bono basis.  See  https://www.legalreader.com/corporate-criminality-climate-crisis-in-2022/

I hope it helps us all with references on environmental harms to us all.

“Criminal” Climate Crisis

Dear Care for Crash Victims Community Members:

When I began working in the U.S. Public Hralth Service in 1966, I was privileged to work with, and for, inspiring and brilliant people dedicated to protecting us all.

Over the years I was able to help build the case for getting the lead out of gasoline and children’s blood.

I also was able to help get catalysts into cars to reduce carbon monoxide and smog producing hydrocarbon emissions.

Back in the 1960’s we were not cognizant of the growing worldwide climate crisis.

Since then I have witnessed first hand worrisome stories of the power of Presidents vs. people in air pollution control   See

https://www.legalreader.com/presidents-livable-environment/

Today we read that the U.N. Secretary General released a most thorough report on the Climate Crisis and called “This abdication of leadership is criminal.”
And today we also read that the current Supreme Court may curtail the ability of the EPA to control air pollution.  See my recent pro bono article published by Legal Reader at

https://www.legalreader.com/criminal-climate-crisis-earth-day-2022/

Hopefully more “criminal” abdication of leadership will be stopped before it is too late for too many of us.

Rollover Crashes: Cheaper If They Die

Dear Care for Crash Victims Community Members:
Legal Reader has kindly published an article I submitted (pro bono) that tells a brief story on how just months after I retired from NHTSA to work on improving care for crash victims, I learned an important insight on rollover deaths, injuries, and the corporatized legal system.
Please see how I learned an important lesson.

See https://www.legalreader.com/rollover-crashes-cheaper-if-they-die/
Rollover crashes kill thousands of Americans every year.

The latest published NHTSA data is for the year 2018.

Table 115 attached shows that in that year 6,514 Americans died in Rollover crashes.  Data is also available there for occupants of cars, trucks and vans by State and Vehicle Type.
Rollover crashes also result in many thousands more serious injuries each year such as spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries,

Hopefully publishing this story will help build a Safer America.
